BLOOD GLUCOSE

Blood Glucose test...
This test is done for measuring a patients blood glucose level. the procedure is done depending on what the doctor has ordered - FBS, RBS, 2hr postprandial or glucose tolerance. Consent is a must for it is an invasive procedure. Instruct the patient that you will be collecting blood specimen for the test, the collection may be done through vernipunture, or through the use of a lancet or needle. Specimen is placed in a tight vial, or syringe when vernipunture is done, pipette, slide, strip, or small container when pricking using a lancet.

The specimen will be sent to the laboratory or a glucose meter can be used. A glucose meter is a gadget that has a special strip where small amount of blood is placed and the meter reads the level of glucose in the patients blood. Some people said that this meter is not that accurate they still do want the test to be performed in the laboratory.

The nurse's duty is to explain to the patient on what procedure is to be done, inform the patient that he/she might feel a stinging sensation and keep the sight free from any possible infection.
